The Mount Paris Dam is an easy, short drive from Weldboroungh on Tasmania's East Coast. The dam has an extremely interesting history and it is worth researching this before you visit. On arrival at the dam site, you may initially think that it is rather small given the over-grown nature of the vegetation. Well, are you in for a surprise!

Mount Paris Dam sits on the Cascade River south of Derby, Tasmania. It was built as the Morning Star Dam, water source for a nearby tin mine of the same name. If it were filled, it would just be another medium-sized dam among many in Tasmania. However, in 1985 the Rivers and Waters Supply Commission intentionally holed the dam.

It is a very small and abandoned dam, with the Cascade River running through it. It was built in 1936 as the "Morning Star Dam" for the purpose of tin mining, for the Mount Paris Tin Mine nearby. The dam operated until the closure of the mine in 1961, but changed owners a couple of times along the way.

Mt Paris Dam, on the Mt Paris Road, is the only surviving pillar and slab dam in Tasmania. Originally named the Morning Star Dam, it was built across the Cascade River using only shovels and wheelbarrows in 1937 and was connected by an 11 Km water race with the Mt Paris Mine. The mine closed in 1970 and the dam fell into disuse.
