The ruins of Diocletian's Palace, built between the late 3rd and the early 4th centuries A.D., can be found throughout the city. The cathedral was built in the Middle Ages, reusing materials from the ancient mausoleum.

Considered to be one of the most imposing Roman ruins, Diocletian's palace is certainly the main attraction of the city of Split, Croatia. These ruins are some of the most valuable surviving buildings of the Roman era on the Adriatic coast.

Diocletian's Palace was completed in 305 AD. This fortified complex housed palatial apartments, a military garrison, temples and a mausoleum. After Diocletian's death at the age of 66, the palace was occupied by a succession of despots before being abandoned in the sixth century.
